This is my very first review....well for the website...I may have a couple floating around somewhere else....anyway enjoy!
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 5 is the latest enstallment in the Resident Evil Franchise (yeah, I know big surprise). This time you're following the misadventures of Chris Redfield. No longer working for Special Tactics and Rescue Service, but now working for the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. As such you're sent to a remote province in Africa to find out what's going on and to stop an illegal arms deal, but just like the first game, nothing is as simple as it sounds.
The story starts off with you and your partner, Sheva Alamar, trying to find a weapons deal somewhere in Africa. Though once you've been given your weapon, that's when the perverbial spit hits the fan. Once peaceful residence of the area, now come at you as though they were an addict seeing your body as one big block of crack. Soon you find out that they're being infected by some new biological warfare agent, and used for experiments. It's your job from then on, to figure out what happened, and try to stop whoever is responsible.
The game plays very similar to Resident Evil 4, meaning you've got the over the shoulder view, the aiming is used by a lazer sight convienently placed on all your weapons, save for the rifles and grenades. Though you won't be going alone, there's a second playable character that you have with you from the begining. Though if you don't have a buddy to play with the AI is more than happy to play the other character.
The graphics are what you'd expect for a next gen game. They're pollished and look stunning. Some of the creatures you'll face in the game look amazing, and a few will have you saying "Oh thit" or something to that effect.
Controls are just a basic copy from RE4, not to say that's a bad thing. Aiming is easy and can be done without to much trouble, though sometimes it can be a pain on the faster enemies.
Also at the end of each mission you're graded on how well you do. Things like deaths, time it took to complete and accuracy are taken into account. Now while that sounds like it would detract from the fun of the game, it acctually is there for a reason. You gain points based on the difficulty that you played on, and how well you did. Those points are then used to buy costumes for your characters, different visual filters, and infinite ammo for your weapons (after you've played the game though once and upgraded said weapon to it's max).
Though, nothing is perfect and the game does have flaws.
The ever annoying quicktime event has somehow managed to survive (though the Attache Case couldn't?!). So at periodic times throughout the game, you're gonna get the typical (to steal a line from another reviewer) "Press X not to die" crap. So you're gonna have to make sure you've got your thumbs or fingers ready to go.
When you let the AI control your partner, she has the tendancy to dump a full clip of ammunition into your back, and use up any health items for the dumbest reasons. You could swallow a bug and she'll come over and spray you down with your last Red and Green herb combination, while the boss of the level is about to swipe a claw and knock you to your doom.
The game is short as well, I managed to beat it in just a little under 4 hours, on hard. It feels like that just as the story gets going, and things start getting good, you're at the end boss and fighting for your life.
All and all, it's a great game, one that I heartily recommend. It would be well suited for any fan of Resident Evil, or survival horror fan.
See ya next time!
